Matt Peet spoke to the media in a joint press conference at The Brick Community Stadium ahead of the derby clash against St Helens.

The Warriors head coach was joined by captain Liam Farrell and St Helens’ Paul Wellens and Matty Lees to preview Friday night’s Betfred Super League Round 17 fixture.

Reflecting on the Warriors’ win over Leigh Leopards last time out, Peet said: “I’ve watched it a few times – I enjoyed the game and the performance. It was very intense against a Leigh side who were highly-charged and for large parts the game was even. In the end we had some important moments from some good players that managed to secure the win.”

Looking ahead to Friday night’s derby, Peet said: “It’s the stand out league fixture that everyone looks forward to and the ones you remember when you look back on at the end of the season. The fans bring the atmosphere and the players generally respond. It will be a great atmosphere as two proud teams will go at it which is everything you want.”

On preparing for the encounter, Peet said: “The more intense the game is the more simpler the preparation needs to be. We can do our preparation on the opposition but it’s about getting your own game in order first as Friday night will come down to which team does the basics the best.”

On St Helens, who sit four points behind the Warriors in second, Peet said: “They’re going to come out eager to right some wrongs. They’re very experienced in knowing how to win these big games. They know what they look like when they play well and they will be looking to get back to that. The fact is they are one of the best defensive teams and they know that it won’t take a great deal for them to get back to winning form.”

Speaking on Dean Bell, who will be the guest of honour at the match as well as the latest Legend on the Loch Lomond Series on Tuesday night, Peet said: “Certainly from my childhood he’s probably the legend who was the captain when lifting so many trophies. It’s been unbelievable meeting him and I look forward to hearing him speak to the players who I’m sure will be inspired by his presence.”
