Match Report as Wigan Warriors women beat featherstone rovers to nil in betfred Women’s Super League.

Four first half tries got Wigan into a steady 22-0 lead at the turnaround before a further five tries in the second forty for the Cherry & Whites saw them hit the half Century.

The fixture also saw returns from injury for Jenna Foubister, Eva Hunter and Carys Marsh.

Report

It was the hosts who threatened first as a kick from a penalty failed to find touch and Featherstone were able to collect. Rovers then got a penalty to get them a fresh set from 35 metres away and testing out the left edge, Anna Davies was called into action to make an exceptional tackle on wing to put Featherstone into touch to deny an opening score.

The Warriors responded well to the early danger though and another penalty got them into good field position before Eva Hunter, returning after a two-month injury lay-off, was sent through a gap to race 30 metres and score close to the sticks. Isabel Rowe converted and it was 6-0.

Wigan crossed again 10 minutes later as Georgia Wilson got her name on the scoresheet. A cutout pass from Rowe found Banks to send Wilson onto the ball and crashing over from close range. The conversion from Rowe was more difficult this time, but she was on target for 12-0.

Rachel Thompson was next over as she finished off a play just five minutes later. Rowe was involved again, sending a troubling ball skywards and with the ball allowed to bounce, it fell to Thompson to collect and muscle over for the third of the afternoon. The touchline conversion was missed this time.

A fourth of the opening half was scored by Grace Banks just before the half hour, as the ball went through hands before finding full-back Banks who eased through the defensive line, the effort was converted once more by Rowe for 22-0 at the turnaround.

Anna Davies looked certain to have scored Wigan’s fifth just 4 minutes into the second half but good chase from Featherstone saw Ellie Lamb pull off a try-saving tackle just inches from the goal line to see the ball come free and it remained 22-0.

Wigan did get over shortly afterwards though. This time Jenna Foubister, another returning from injury, showed great strength to peel away from a tackle before racing to the line and getting the ball down under pressure. Rowe added the two to make it 28-0.

The hour mark saw Georgia Wilson cross for her second and Wigan’s sixth of the afternoon, the centre easing over on the edge after good build-up play in the middle from Vicky Molyneux.

The good attacking play continued and Wigan crossed again in the 65th minute as Foubister took the ball to the line before getting a great pass away to Rease Casey who dived in under the posts. Rowe converted as Wigan made it 40-0.

The Warriors crossed for two more tries in the final 10 minutes as Banks crossed for her second of the day, a carbon copy of her earlier try before Anna Davies rounded off the proceedings with an effort on the right wing with just a minute left to play. Wigan went away with a 50-0 victory.
