Wigan Warriors Wheelchair made a winning start to their Betfred Super League title defence with a strong win over Hull FC on Saturday afternoon.

Report

It was a cagey first half, with both teams struggling to capitalise. An early try by Player/Coach Chris Greenhalgh opened the scoring, benefitting from some slick handling by Jack Heggie and Phil Roberts, but that was the only try of the first 40 minutes.

After the turnaround, Wigan were into the swing of things and went on a run of scoring. Greenhalgh got his second after being put through a gap by Dec Roberts, with Roberts then involved again when he reversed the play that allowed Jack Heggie to supply Adam Rigby for Wigan’s third.

Heggie scored a hat-trick of tries to put the game out of reach of the Black and Whites. Using his electric pace, Heggie was able to leave the defenders in his wake and open up a 36-0 lead, with the help of Roberts from the tee.

A high, cross court kick from Tristan Norfolk was collected by Joshua Edwards who was then able to touch down for Hull FC’s first try of the afternoon.

With strength in depth, the Cherry & Whites were soon back to scoring, this time Nathan Roberts with excellent chair skills and pace to breeze past the FC defence. This was quickly followed by Heggie’s fourth, a similar effort to that of Nathan Roberts.

A defensive slip by Wigan allowed the home side to capitalise and score a couple of late tries. The first was a crash over from Norfolk, before Edwards raced down the right flank to score in the corner.

However, the final say went to the reigning Betfred Super League Champions, with Rigby evading a Norris tackle out wide after Nathan Roberts released him with a pass timed to perfection. Slotting over the conversion, Heggie sealed a 54-16 victory.
