Wigan Warriors Wheelchair head coach Chris Greenhalgh has shared his excitement ahead of Saturday’s European Championship clash against Catalans Dragons.
The reigning Wheelchair Super League champions make a triumphant return to Robin Park Arena on Saturday evening when they face Coupe De France and Challenge Cup holders Catalans Dragons in the European Wheelchair Rugby League Club Championship.
The showpiece fixture presents the opportunity for the Warriors to be crowned the best domestic wheelchair team in Europe, and head coach Chris Greenhalgh is relishing the clash against the French side.
“I’m looking forward to the fixture which will be a massive occasion for the Club,” Greenhalgh said. “Whether you’re a player or a coach you want to play against the very best and in my opinion Catalans have been one the best teams in Europe for many years.
“It’s also an opportunity for the lads to set a benchmark for the year after working so hard through pre-season. Everything is starting to come together now and as a team we’re all feeling good going into the game.”
Catalans were crowned back-to-back Coupe De France champions in May before they beat Leeds Rhinos to lift a first Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup title in August.
“The test against Catalans is always a tough battle,” Greenhalgh said. “They’re fast, physical and relentless which poses a different challenge than most teams in Super League.”
Greenhalgh, who led the Warriors to a Super League title in his first season as head coach, is hoping to emulate the Men’s First Team’s World Club Challenge success over Penrith Panthers.
“The chance to be crowned European champions ahead of the season is great, not just for the players but for the Club as a whole,” he said. “We would love to join our Men’s First Team in being the best of the best the game has to offer.”
A Northern Soul theme – reviving the days of Wigan Casino – has been chosen for this year’s event, and Greenhalgh is encouraging Wigan supporters to get behind their team at Robin Park.
“This will be a hard-hitting, fast-paced game which will showcase some of the best attacking players in the world,” the head coach said. “We saw the extra boost a home crowd gave England in the World Cup Final, and we’d love a full house to be our driving force on Saturday night.
“As I said before it’s a massive occasion for the Club playing one of the best teams in the world on our home court, which makes it the perfect time to get behind your local team.”
