Recent Challenge Cup Sixth Round victories
As the Warriors prepare to open their challenge cup account against Sheffield Eagles, we take a look back at three previous Sixth Round victories.
The Warriors welcome Sheffield Eagles to the DW Stadium for the first time on Friday night, which will be the first meeting between the sides since Wigan beat Sheffield 50-34 at Bramhall Lane in 2010.
Ahead of the tie, we take a look back at three recent victories at this stage in the competition:
Hull KR 10-28 Wigan Warriors, 13 May, 2018
Under Head Coach Shaun Wane, the Warriors sealed an impressive victory over 12-man Hull KR at Craven Park.
After a close opening period in West Hull, the Warriors opened the scoring through Josh Woods before Liam Marshall restored the lead after Taioalo Vaivai levelled for the hosts.
Despite having Danny Tickle sent off just before the break for a clash with John Bateman – sin-binned for his involvement in the incident – Hull KR levelled the match until Sam Tomkins put the Warriors back ahead before late tries from Tony Clubb and Tom Davies confirmed the win.
Wigan Warriors 20-0 Salford Red Devils, 25 March, 2022
Prior to defeating Huddersfield Giants in the Challenge Cup Final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Warriors overcame Salford Red Devils in a dominant victory at the DW Stadium.
Two tries in the space of three first half minutes from Liam Byrne and Liam Marshall saw the Warriors lead 14-0 at the break. Despite soaking up a lot of Salford pressure after the restart, a fine try from John Bateman sealed a place in the quarter-finals.
Leeds Rhinos 14-18 Wigan Warriors, 20 May, 2023
The Warriors’ last Sixth Round outing resulted in an unforgettable victory over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium.
Despite falling 14-0 behind after 32 minutes following tries from Tom Holyroyd and Harry Newman, Bevan French’s double brought Wigan back into the contest.
A memorable first senior try from Junior Nsemba put the Warriors ahead, before Jake Wardle rounded off a fine move to seal a place in the quarter-finals.
