Iain Thornley joins Wakefield
Wigan Warriors can confirm that Centre, Iain Thornley, will leave the Club to take up an opportunity with Wakefield Trinity.
32-year-old Thornley re-joined the Warriors ahead of the 2022 campaign from Leigh Leopards, on a two-year deal.
A product of Wigan’s Academy, Thornley has since gone on to have two spells with the Warriors. In four seasons between 2012-2015 he scored 30 tries in 45 games and was part of the double-winning side in 2013 who lifted the Challenge Cup and Super League trophies.
After re-joining the Club, Thornley was part of the winning side as Wigan beat Huddersfield Giants in the 2022 Challenge Cup Final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and also lifted the League Leaders’ Shield for the first time with Wigan in 2023.
Though not selected in the Betfred Super League Grand Final, Thornley was also part of the 2023 squad that were crowned Champions.
Speaking on his departure, Iain Thornley said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to everybody at Wigan Warriors for the past two years – the coaching staff, the players, the fans and everyone who works behind the scenes at the club.
“To be able to be part of Wigan Warriors again and be part of winning trophies are memories that me and my family will remember forever and we are truly grateful.”
On Iain Thornley, Chief Executive Kris Radlinski said: “We would like to express our gratitude to Iain for his time with the Warriors. Working with him has been an absolute pleasure.
“Despite facing some unfortunate setbacks, his conduct on a daily basis has been commendable. Winning championships isn’t solely about the 17 players who wear the jerseys; it also depends on those who contribute to creating a better environment.”
He added: “Iain certainly belongs to this category. His significant role in our 2022 Challenge Cup victory, despite a serious knee injury, is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the club. Thanks again Iain and good luck.”
Wigan Warriors would like to thank Iain for his efforts across multiple spells at the Club and wish him all the best as he continues his career with Wakefield Trinity.
