Harry Smith says it would be ‘unbelievable’ to represent Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.
The Warriors reached the Grand Final after Liam Marshall scored three of Wigan’s seven tries in a 42-12 victory over Hull KR in the Play-Off Semi-Final at the DW Stadium.
Reflecting on the win over the Robins, Smith said: “It was a brilliant win. We came out the blocks firing in the first 20 minutes to blow them away before we were able to see out the remainder of the game. It was just a great win in what was one of our best performances all year.”
Speaking on the importance of the half-time team talk, Smith added: “We were reminded of all the hard work we’d put in from the start of pre-season and we were told how we deserved to kick on through based on how well we’ve been playing. We’ve been building and gaining this form over the last two months, and hopefully we can show it again one more time on Saturday.”
Smith was successful with all seven of his kicks, which saw him surpass 500 Super League points, and on the achievement, he said: “It was a brilliant feeling as I’ve been putting in a lot of work with the kicking coach. To do it in a big game when it’s needed was nice, but it was also nice to prove a few people wrong.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s Betfred Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, Smith said: “I’m just looking to enjoy and embrace this week in the build up to the big occasion. It hasn’t sunk in yet and I don’t think it will until I look around the stadium.
“From a young age and coming through the Academy I’ve watched Wigan win Grand Finals and now I’m going from sitting in the stands with the fans to playing on the pitch – it’s unbelievable.”
Speaking on the balance the Warriors have in their squad heading into the match, Smith said: “It’s very good and it’s what’s helped us all season. We have lads like myself who are young and enthusiastic, and then we have the experienced lads who have already been there and done it. If everyone can step up and do their bit, and the older lads lead from the front for us to follow, it will put us in good stead.”
The Warriors will face Catalans Dragons in the Grand Final, and on the French side, Smith said: “They were top of the league for most the season and we know they’re a very good team who will be there for the whole 80 minutes. We’ll have to be at our best for the whole game, but if we can stick to our process then we know it should be good enough to get the win.”
