Matt Peet praised the Warriors performance and support as Wigan beat Hull KR 42-12 to reach the Betfred Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.
Speaking on the result, Peet said: “We’ve worked so hard for this – the players in particular – all the way from pre-season in order to get to this and we’ve achieved it. Credit to the players for their commitment to the plan and to one another – I’m really proud of the whole group. It was excellent to watch and brilliant that we could play that kind of rugby for our fans who were fantastic today.”
On the game, Peet said: “It wasn’t a score I expected or the game that we prepared for, but credit to the lads who put themselves in that position. We were prepared for a very intense game, and I think the intensity we started with put us in the position that we had the game won earlier than we expected.”
On the importance of the half time team talk, Peet said: “We discussed at length about how Hull KR could pose points and how we could react to that. It was good that we scored first at the start of the second half, but our coaching staff done a good job in keeping us grounded defensively throughout.”
Liam Marshall capped off his 150th Wigan Warriors appearance with a hat-trick in the win, and on the winger, Peet said: “I thought he was absolutely outstanding. He’s been doing that for a while now and his performance was fantastic.”
Club captain Liam Farrell played his 350th game for the Club, whilst Willie Isa returned from injury to make his 200th appearance for the Warriors. Speaking on the trio, Peet said: “It’s best to talk about them as a group as they’ve got so much in common.
“They each epitomize what this Club is about as well as what we want this Club to stand for on and off the field. They’re all fierce competitors who never give in and for me to walk out at Old Trafford with them three in particular makes me immensely proud.”
The Warriors will take on Catalans Dragons in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford next Saturday (14 October), and speaking on the occasion, Peet said: “We now get that opportunity on the biggest stage and we’re going to embrace the week ahead as a group and enjoy it. It’s going to be a fantastic game full of great plyers and talent.”
Praising the Warriors support, Peet said: “The fans played their part and now we’ve got to get it won. We need to keep building so it’s a regular occurrence for our fans and we’ll be doing everything we can to try and bring that trophy home.”
