- FT | Wigan Warriors 48-6 Castleford Tigers.
Matt Peet praised his side after Wigan Warriors remained top of the Super League table after a 48-6 victory over Castleford Tigers at the DW Stadium.
Speaking on the performance, Peet said: “I’m pleased with the way the lads applied themselves particularly at the start of the game. We invested our energy into the early parts which paid off and off the back of that we played some good stuff and were tidy defensively for most the game.”
On winning an eighth straight Super League match, Peet said: “We’re building momentum but it’s important now that we carry it through now into at least three high-class performances.”
Reflecting on Abbas Miski’s five tries, Peet said: “He was outstanding and he deserves all the praise he’s getting. There were some great finishes in those tries and the work he’s doing across the field is outstanding as well. For a winger to score five tries I can’t knock him.”
Peet added: “It shows the fine margins between being one of the best players in the competition to not getting a go. Patience, hard-work, self-belief as well as learning a few things along the way got him in the team.”
Providing an update on the squad, Peet said: “Liam Farrell had a bit of a tight calf but he will be fine for a full weeks training next week. Brad O’Neill coming out was an opportunity to get Ryan Hampshire onto the bench as we always wanted to refresh our half back options in the game. We got a chance to give Morgan Smithies a rest as well which ticked a box.”
Praising Ryan Hampshire, Peet said: “He’s earned it as his attitude has been outstanding. We’ve had some of the senior players and coaches coming to us singing his praises and he’s really forced our hand into making us pick him. It was just a matter of finding the right week to fit him in and we might need him again this season.”
On winning the League Leaders Shield, Peet said: “To finish top would be fantastic for the club as it would show consistency. The message to the players is that we have got to execute everything we have learnt all year into the next three games for this season to be deemed a success.”
Looking ahead to Friday night’s clash against Leigh Leopards, Peet said: “It’s going to be awesome. We know what to expect from Leigh with the season they’ve had and there is no doubt that they’ll be motivated to win their last home game of the regular year in style. It’s going to be a cracking night.
