Wigan Warriors hooker Sam Powell expressed his delight in playing his first minutes since June as he returned to action in our Reserves win over Hull KR.
Powell, who has been absent for eight weeks after undergoing an operation on a shoulder injury, started in the Warriors Reserves 74-12 win over Hull KR at Robin Park Arena last week.
The hooker marked his comeback with an assist as he set up Ryan Hampshire to score the second of 13 tries – six of which were scored by Jacob Douglas who completed a hat-trick in each half.
Speaking at Sale Sharks’ Carrington training ground on Wednesday, Powell said: “First of all it was great to be back out there after a long six to eight weeks. Ideally I’d have had the operation at the end of the season, but it kept bugging me so I just had to get it done.”
Powell added: “I’m just glad to have played around 60 minutes which was ideal for myself to test the shoulder and it was good fun – I enjoyed it.”
As part of a changed week of training, the Warriors camped in the Lake District on Monday night, as the squad took part in a variety of team bonding sessions such as paddleboarding.
Reflecting on the week, Powell said: “The coaching staff decided it would be best to take us away from Robin Park with the idea being that it would make us fresher leading into Hull FC.
“It’s been a great week and something different. [On paddleboarding] The water was a bit choppy, and I fell in as Sean Lockers was jumping on to my board and knocking me off. I think it was serious for around five minutes before it got a bit daft – it was all good fun though.”
