Wigan Warriors will host the inaugural Premier Touch Rugby League event at Robin Park Arena on Saturday.

Joining hosts Wigan Warriors are foundation sides from Hull FC, Hull KR, Sheffield Eagles, Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves for a one-day extravaganza showcasing the skills and social benefits of Touch Rugby League.

Away from the action on the field, visitors can enjoy plenty of fun with live music from local band Casino Club, as well as food and beverage stalls and a Fan Village.

The action gets underway at 10.30am, takes a break in the afternoon as Wigan Warriors take on Leigh Leopards in the Betfred Super League (KO 1pm), then resumes at 3.30pm with entertainment continuing into the evening.

RFL Social Officer, Brad Kelk, says: “We launched the innovative Touch Rugby League programme earlier this year to help drive up participation in the social game among adults, and we’re really excited to be working with Wigan Warriors on this showcase event.

“It promises to be a fantastic day for our foundations, players and spectators alike. And it’s all free!”

Devised by the Rugby Football League, a Foundation Touch Series is now being delivered by pro and semi-pro club foundations, giving them the flexibility to provide different levels of activity to help players aged 14 and over improve their skills and confidence in a social setting.

Activities will be delivered over a five-year period – with support from the RFL – and as player demand grows, club foundations will have the opportunity to expand their offer from weekly sessions and community events into competitive leagues.

Brad Kelk added: “We have been really pleased with how well the Foundation Touch Series has been received by club foundations. Social variants of the game are a major focus area for us and will become increasingly significant over the next five years.

“Our aim is to create a sustainable playing model by supporting foundations to deliver weekly sessions, which will hopefully lead to the formation of teams and local leagues.”
