Challenge Cup 2022 Quarter Final Recap

Ahead of Sunday’s Challenge Cup Quarter Final clash with Warrington Wolves at the DW Stadium, we revisit last season’s victory at Wakefield Trinity en route to lifting our 20th title.

After kickstarting our 2022 Challenge Cup winning campaign with a comfortable 20-0 victory over Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium, the Warriors were handed a quarter final tie at Wakefield Trinity.

Despite the hosts asking questions of Wigan’s defence in the early stages, it was the Warriors who went ahead after 12 minutes when Liam Farrell broke clear before setting up Jai Field to dive over.

Although Trinity levelled through Lewis Murphy’s acrobatic effort mid-way through the first half, the Warriors led at the interval courtesy of Ethan Havard’s try five minutes before the break.

Wigan crossed for a third try less than a minute after the restart when Field went over unchallenged off the back of a powerful drive from Mago, and a fourth came on the hour when John Bateman’s clever offload allowed Zak Hardaker to collect and touch down.

The Warriors confirmed their place in the semi-final with two tries in the final 10 minutes. First Farrell pounced on a loose ball following Cade Cust’s high kick, before Field finished off a slick team move to complete his hat-trick.

Just as he had done with four successful goals against Salford in the Sixth Round, Hardaker maintained his perfect kicking accuracy with a further six in West Yorkshire.

After seeing off Leeds Rhinos at the first hurdle in Matt Peet’s Challenge Cup defence, Wigan now face Super League joint table toppers Warrington Wolves on Sunday for a place in the semi-final.
