Emerging Schools Festivals

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation delivered a new high schools festival programme at Robin Park Arena during the last school term that has engaged with over 700 local secondary school students.

The programme has been delivered to create more playing opportunities and support local Community Clubs with new players. Each Wednesday this term has given year 7 to year 10 boys and girls an opportunity to compete in a 9-a-side festival format against local schools.

Andy Unsworth of St John Fisher said: “A big thank you to Wigan Warriors Community Foundation for putting these festivals together. It’s a great opportunity for not only the rugby team, but pupils of all abilities (boys and girls) who have a passion for sport.

“It’s a fantastic venue with a great pitch. I have high hopes that we might re-establish our girls team off the back of this fantastic event.”

Assistant Head of Community, Danny Fullerton added: “This term has seen a lot of schools enter teams that have not previously played rugby before mixed in with regular attending schools.

“To have such a positive uptake from Wigan, Leigh and other North West schools is fantastic and this programme will continue to build momentum through the next summer term and hopefully benefit the local clubs with more registered community players.”
