Matt Peet reflected on Wigan Warriors’ 46-22 Magic Weekend defeat to Catalans Dragons at St James’ Park.

Reflecting on the performance, Peet said: “Today was a big event and we let ourselves down. We were particularly poor doing the simple things. Our core skills were poor, some of our defence was sub par, but overall we were poor in several areas.”

Jai Field marked his first appearance since March with a start in Newcastle, and speaking on the Australian’s return from injury, Peet said: “Every time we get a player back from injury it’s a positive. I threw Jai back in at the deep end today, and for that I have to take responsibility. However, it was great seeing him back out on the field and he’s only going to get better the more he plays.”

Speaking on the opposition, Peet said: “Catalans were excellent and very clinical. They were better than us with the ball and in defence, and they have one of the best finishers in the competition. They were outstanding and showed what they are capable of.”

Looking ahead to Friday’s derby with St Helens, Peet said: “We’ve got to train well and demand that we perform more like our standard next week. There are reasons why we are not at our best at the moment, but we need to work harder.”
