Community Foundation ‘Cumbria Day’

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation recently spent the day in Cumbria to spread the word about Rugby League in the Cumbrian Community.

Coaches from the Community Foundation went up to Furness Academy in Barrow, Cumbria where they engaged with Primary School Year 6 (age 10/11) and High School Year 7-10 (age 11-15). This is the start of the Cumbria girls development pathway with Wigan Warriors.

There were over 300 girls in attendance across the age groups and we will continue the development with rugby delivery in both primary and high schools leading into evening and weekend development camps.

Rugby Development Manager, John Whalley said: “Cumbria is a hot bed of talent, so to hold a festival at Furness Academy was fantastic. The facilities were great and with over 300 girls attending, it was nothing short of fantastic.

“Girls aged between 10 and 15-years-old participated in a core skill carousel with a tag rugby festival style round robin of games. I thought the standard of rugby was very good and it was great to see young players with a smile on their face. I am really looking forward to developing girls Rugby League in Cumbria going forward in 2023 and beyond.”
