Women continue unbeaten run

Wigan Warriors Women continued their unbeaten run in 2023 as they held off Huddersfield Giants in a 20-30 victory at Huddersfield Laund Hill on Sunday.

Cailey Miller made a long-awaited debut for the Warriors after a long term ACL injury which she suffered shortly after joining the Warriors, which was sealed with a first try in Cherry & White.

Huddersfield raced into an 8-0 lead with quick tries from Erin Stott and Hannah Goddard before the Warriors responded through youngsters Molly Jones and Grace Banks with Salihi unable to convert the opening two scores, it was all square at 8-8.

Wigan did overturn the early deficit though to go in with a 16-8 lead at the break as Cailey Miller crossed for a debut try and Mary Coleman added another to her season tally, again both were unconverted.

The Giants were certainly not making it easy for the travelling Warriors, as they hit back with two tries to level the game once more. Winger Amelia Brown crossed for the Giants third, with Ellie Thompson also adding her name to the try-scoring list for 16-16.

End to end tries then saw Bethany Hayes score her third in two games, but Huddersfield responded rapidly through Millie Taylor and it was 20-20.

Wigan wrapped up the victory however as vice-Captain Victoria Molyneux scored, with Salihi converting before Eva Hunter wrapped up the two-points with a try just short of full time to confirm the 30-20 win for the Warriors.

The win puts Wigan second in the table after the opening two rounds, sitting behind York Valkyrie who have won all three of their Betfred Women’s Super League games in 2023. The Warriors Women now have a week off before they face St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday 11th June.
