Sam Powell says he there is ‘a big challenge ahead’ as Wigan Warriors prepare to face Leeds Rhinos in the Sixth Round of the Challenge Cup at Headingley Stadium on Saturday.

Powell has won two Grand Finals and a World Club Challenge during his ten years at the club, but he is yet to lift the Challenge Cup after missing out at Wembley in 2017.

Reflecting on last week’s Super League Round 12 defeat to Rhinos, Powell said: “We were disappointed with the result, but part of being professional is about being honest and learning quick.

“Gameplan wise not much changes, it’s just about putting the few things right we got wrong last Friday. We are being positive and working hard in training so that when it kicks off on Saturday it’s about putting those things into practice.”

Speaking on the upcoming tie, Powell said: “Leeds at Headingley is always a big game as they are a massive club with a great history, but the fact we won the Challenge Cup last year is a big reason why we need to go there and win. It will be a massive challenge, but we are really looking forward to it.”

On retaining the Challenge Cup, Powell added: “As a club we have great history in this competition and last year was a great achievement. The Challenge Cup is the first crack at winning something this year and it is something I’ve never won so I’m desperate to try and lift it.

“We have worked really hard on our culture and for it to be a good place here so winning a trophy would probably be the head point of it. We have a big challenge ahead on Saturday and hopefully we can perform well to go through.”
