As our 2023 Challenge Cup campaign gets underway at Headingley Stadium on Saturday we look back at five memorable victories over Leeds Rhinos in the competition.

The Challenge Cup’s most successful teams clash for a second week running, however, it is the first meeting in the competition since 2020.

Wigan and Leeds have faced off 31 times in the cup, with each team winning 15 matches and only one draw being played out.

We take a look back at five of our most memorable Challenge Cup victories over Leeds:

Wigan 30-14 Leeds, Second Round, 14 February, 1988

Warriors knocked Rhinos out the competition in the early rounds, which kickstarted a record-breaking run of eight consecutive Challenge Cup final victories.

Kevin Iro scored twice in the win over Leeds at Central Park, before his double helped Wigan to a 32-12 victory against Halifax in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Wigan 26-16 Leeds, Final, 30 April, 1994

Wigan lifted their seventh successive Challenge Cup trophy after a hard-fought victory, in which Martin Offiah MBE scored one of the greatest ever tries at Wembley Stadium when he ran 90m to open the scoring.

Andy Farrell crossed to give Wigan the lead at the break, and despite Leeds reducing the score to 14-10, Offiah scored his second of the afternoon before Sam Panapa dived over to seal the win.

Wigan won everything on offer in 1993-1994 including the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year.

Wigan 30-10 Leeds, Final, 29 April, 1995

Under coach Graeme West, Wigan won the trophy for the eighth consecutive season, a record that still stands today.

Jason Robinson scored twice in a player of the match performance, along with tries from Martin Hall, Henry Paul and Va’aiga Tuigamala.

Leeds 18-22 Wigan, Round Five, 12 May, 2007

Wigan’s last Challenge Cup victory at Headingley came in a 2007, when they ran out winners in a closely contested encounter in West Yorkshire.

Sean O’Loughlin, who captained Wigan to Challenge Cup victories in 2011 and 2013, scored Warriors’ second try of the afternoon, before he was involved in denying Leeds a match winning score in the final seconds.

Wigan 28-18 Leeds, Final, 27 August, 2011

Wigan maintained their perfect record against Leeds in Challenge Cup finals to lift the trophy for a record 18th time.

Two tries from Jeff Lima saw the prop forward awarded the Lance Todd Trophy, as Josh Charnley, Joel Tomkins and Thomas Leuluai also went over on a memorable afternoon at Wembley Stadium.
