Alcedo success in Easter half term

  • Over 270 boys aged 11 – 16 attended our sessions over the two days at Robin Park Arena.
  • Over the sessions the boys took part in a variation of sessions including Athletic movement, Wrestling, core skills and skill games.
  • This was in partnership with our performance department, foundation coaches and volunteers taking part in our CPD program.

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and Alcedo Cares held their second set of Futures days at Robin Park Arena over the Easter half term with over 270 young players in attendance.

The sessions, which took place over two days, included a variety of athletic movement, wrestling, core skills and skill games to help improve player development in key areas.

One of the attendees, Leighton Clarke from Ince Rose Bridge Community Club said: “Wigan Warriors futures programme has really helped me. During sessions they make sure their priority is player development and competitive to improve. They have coaching staff who point out areas I can improve on or to alter so I can make my game better.”

Tom Douglas, Wigan St Pats’ coach, who is part of our Coach CPD programme added: “Coaching at Wigan Warriors futures programme is something that I take a lot of pride in doing. The knowledge and experience I have gained so far is extremely valuable and I am able to pass that on at my Community Club; Wigan St Pats. The continued support that I receive from fellow coaches and senior staff at Wigan Warriors is something that I will be forever grateful for.”

Wigan Warriors Community Coach, Tom Marsh said: “Throughout Easter the sessions have been a great success. The players attending showed great skills and improvement from the last time they came on our Futures days. Since the last futures days in February we asked the coaches to progress what the players have learnt in the February camps. The players adapted really well to this progression and showed great attitude towards learning new skills.”

He added: “For the next Alcedo days in May/June, we are going to look at pushing the participants further to help them progress their skills to take back to their community clubs and schools.

“The support from Alcedo Care again on the camps has been great, as they came down to the sessions with the staff and branding and providing little touches throughout the sessions of giving the players water bottles is great touch and us as staff and I’m sure the players really appreciate it. We look forward to working with them for the future sessions throughout the year.”

Head of Youth, Shane Eccles also said: “It was great to see so many young players in these sessions. The sessions provide a fantastic opportunity for young players to hone their skills and develop as rugby players. The support we have had from Alcedo has been fantastic and has strengthened this programme. We will have a summer programme coming out in the next few weeks with opportunities for players to also be involved in competitive games”
