Warriors support North West girls festival

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and Greenmount Projects are pleased to support the recently rebranded North West Girls Rugby League Festival for 2023.

The one-day festival concept, which came alive in 2018 at Culcheth has seen a continued rise over the years as the growth of Girls and Women’s Rugby League continues to rise.

In 2018, the festival consisted of four team before growing to 16 teams in its’ second year. The 2023 festival will see an incredible 50 teams participating from 18 Community Clubs across a total of six age categories (U11s – U16s).

Formerly a Lancashire based tournament, this year also sees the rebrand branch out as ‘North West’ to allow teams from Cumbria and other surrounding areas to participate.

This year, the festival will take place at Halton Farnworth Hornets in Widnes (Wilmere Lane) on Sunday 30th July – in association with Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and Greenmount Projects who have provided a strong backing of the Women’s game for 2023.

Martyn Leech, organiser of the North West Girls Festival said: “I wanted to provide a festival that female players including my own daughters, would have fond memories of – a festival that would be on par with the boys/mixed teams festivals and allow the girls’ game grow.

“Each year the festival has succeeded expectations and this year is no different, with over 50 teams and 650 players, it is now the World’s largest girls’ rugby league one-day festival.”

He added: “It’s an exciting year and with the support of Greenmount Projects in partnership with Wigan Warriors Community Foundation, this year’s festival is looking to create memories for the players that will last a lifetime.”

Mike Sharkey of Greenmount Projects said: “As a company, Greenmount Projects are very excited to sponsor the North West girls’ festival. With over 50 teams and 650 players, and being the World’s largest girls’ Rugby League one-day festival it is immensely pleasing to see so many young people involved in this event.

“Well done to Danny and Martyn for what must be a logistical challenge to bring the whole event together, and we look forward to watching the games on the 30th July.”

Assistant Head of Community, Danny Fullerton added: “Wigan Warriors Community Foundation recognise the importance to support the rapid growth of girls rugby league and this festival is a great opportunity for the foundation to show our support.

“The day will have a strong Wigan Warriors presence from a variety of players and Community staff presenting awards alongside Greenmount Projects. With the generous sponsorship from Greenmount Projects and the Warriors brand this well-established event will help to raise the profile of girls rugby league.”
