Foundation launch Futures days

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation recently hosted their first Alcedo Futures day over two days in the half term at Robin Park Arena in partnership with our Youth Performance team.

Over the two days, the Community Foundation delivered sessions to over 260 participants from ages 11-16 (School years 7-11) with everyone participating receiving an Alcedo branded t-shirt for taking part in the event.

Throughout the sessions, players were put through their paces with physical testing (speed, jumping and throwing) as well as skills tests, skill drills and small sided skill games.

These sessions are designed for participants to help improve their Rugby skills in the school holidays to take back to both their school and Community Clubs to help benefit them further throughout the season.

Community Coach, Tom Marsh, said: “The sessions that we hosted at Robin Park Arena over the two days were a great success. The participants really bought in to the experience and seem to have really got something out of the sessions to take back to their respective Community Clubs.

“With the Alcedo partnership and the participants receiving a Wigan and Alcedo branded t-shirt it was a nice touch and seemed to give the participants a team feeling to the session with the communication between the players much better than it has in the past when we have done sessions like this. We are going to run more Alcedo Futures day sessions throughout the year with our next ones being in the Easter holidays.”

Shane Eccles, Head of Youth, added: “It was a fantastic two day camp at Robin Park Arena, seeing players from 11 years up to 16 all working with our youth staff to develop their skills.

“These programmes are a great tool for us to work with and see the development of young players through our pathway. We are able to monitor the progress of players throughout the year and work with them to develop their potential.

He added: “To see players using the great facilities we have and access to our coaches in Rugby and Strength and Conditioning can only benefit the players and in turn help develop community rugby league on a whole.”

Andy Boardman, Alcedo Care Managing Director also said: “It has been a pleasure working with the Wigan Warriors ‘Futures’ programme this year.  It’s fantastic to see the passion and enthusiasm these young people have for Rugby League, the attendance last week was amazing.

“We are proud to be part of the Wigan Community, offering person centred care, with family values at the heart of what we do. We also have opportunities for those looking to grow a career in care. It’s a joy to now also be able to support and invest in the young people taking part in the programme as they look to develop their pathways into the sport.”
