Liam Marshall has said his attempts to mirror some of the more experienced players he has played with have left him in good stead as a player today.

The Winger surpassed 100 tries for Wigan during Friday’s 60-0 thumping of Wakefield, scoring four times in a man of the match performance.

“I wasn’t sure when it was coming up, but it was good to make it on Friday” Marshall said, “In my position, I’m lucky to score quite a few tries and to score 100 for my hometown club is something I’ll always remember. I’m very honoured.

“I think as a team we wanted to set a few things right from the first game, and we did. If me, as a Winger, is having a good game it usually means we played well and I think that was the case on Friday night.

“As a club, we speak after games about not getting to high or too low. That’s how we approached it last year and will continue to do this year. Friday was a good win but you have to take lows with highs and keep as level as we can and not get overconfident or ahead of ourselves.

In his Post match press conference, Head Coach Matt Peet said that Marshall epitomizes what he wants in a player here at the club.

“I’m a bit of a joker around here and probably don’t get too many serious compliments!” he said, “But it’s good to hear that from Matt. I try to set myself some high standards that I adhere to and I’ve been lucky enough to play with some older heads here and how the standards they adhere to, doing the things that they do I’ve tried to mirror and it’s put me in good stead.

“Coming off the back of my injury it was a tough time trying to find my feet again. I feel last year I really kicked on and was able to find a vein of form and that’s what I’ve been looking to do all pre-season is to keep driving and keep improving.

“I’ll always be about striving to be better, working on my craft and that my game is the best it can be. But I think there’s still room for improvement.”

Warrior’s left edge was too hot for Wakefield to handle on Friday, with some fantastic combinations on show for all of Marshall’s tries, including a fantastic run onto a Harry Smith chip forward.

“It’s good to see because that’s what we’ve been working on in pre-season” Marshall said.

“I think after Christmas when we start doing the Rugby stuff and getting those combinations together and having a cemented left edge early on meant we could try things and get our combinations together and I think it’s been going quite well. In the first couple of game it’s started to gel, but there’s still more to come from us and that’s exciting going forward.

“We made some good off-season signings in the two new centres, Jake Wardle and Toby King, and with Jake on my side we’re starting to get a bit of a combination together. With players like Harry Smith, Liam Farrell, Jai Field etc, they’re exciting and they create things and hopefully I can be on the end of those and score some more tries.”

Warriors will be looking to take momentum from the result into this Friday’s Round 3 fixture at Castleford, a place Liam Marshall says is always difficult to play.

He said: “They’re a very tough team. They play a lovely brand of rugby and they’ve got some nice set moves so you have to be on your A-game in defence.

“To play them away is always difficult. It’s a hostile environment and it’ll be a great game I’m sure.”
