Women to face Salford in pre-season

  • Wigan Warriors Women to face Salford in pre-season friendly.
  • Mixture of First team and Academy players set to be involved on Sunday 5th March, 2pm K.O.
  • Game will be Wigan’s first friendly fixture ahead of 2023 season, with three more announced.

Wigan Warriors Women will play Salford Red Devils in their first game of pre-season, as they gear up for their fifth season in Betfred Women’s Super League.

A mixture of First team and Academy players are set to be involved in the friendly fixture on Sunday 5th March as the Cherry and Whites travel to face Salford Red Devils for a 2pm kick-off. The fixture will take place at Salford City Roosters.

The game is free to attend and you won’t need a ticket to enter, with all facilities open for drinks and snacks. This game will be Wigan’s first friendly fixture ahead of the 2023 campaign, with further friendly fixtures set to be announced.

Speaking ahead of the pre-season friendlies, Women’s Head Coach Kris Ratcliffe said: “The girls are really looking forward to getting back on the field. It has been a long off and pre-season for them, we started early because we wanted to get some really strong foundation work in terms of strength and conditioning to try to avoid some of the injuries we have been picking up in the last couple of seasons.

“We have fully promoted some of the young players who featured from our Academy side last year and added a few more who are yet to make their first team debuts and they are super eager to do so. They will all feature against Salford.”

He added: “We played Salford in a similar game last year and it was really beneficial for both clubs so it’s good to get it on again and see where we are both at in comparison.”

Salford Red Devils Head Coach, Chris Bates added: “We’re coming to the end of a pre-season where our group have worked tirelessly, and we can’t wait to get going.

“We’re clear in our aim of wanting to compete at the very top and facing Wigan in pre-season will give us an idea of where we are at!”

Salford Red Devils played their first-ever game as a team just 12-months ago, and will compete in Group 2 of Betfred Women’s Super League this season, as well as the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup.

In addition, the Warriors will compete in three other pre-season friendly fixtures all away from home:

  • 12th March 2023 v Leeds Rhinos (First Team)
  • 26th March 2023 v Leigh Leopards (Academy)
  • 2nd April 2023 v Barrow Raiders (First Team)
