Farrell: Home Form Key

  • Liam Farrell spoke on Wigan’s 60-0 victory over Wakefield Trinity.
  • Farrell: “We had a simple mentality in attack and in defence and I thought we nailed them both tonight.”
  • Farrell was appointed captain ahead of the 2023 season and Captained the side at the DW for the first time against Wakefield.

Warriors Captain Liam Farrell discussed Wigan’s Round 2 home opening victory over Wakefield with the press, praising the squad mentality.

On the performance as a whole, Farrell said: “As much as it was a great attacking performance, I think the real positive for us was probably defence. After a disappointing week last week we wanted to make sure we got the basics right. We had a simple mentality in attack and in defence and I thought we nailed them both tonight.

“I just think as individuals everyone was looking for a better performance than last week. I think that came together well as a team and I think we performed really well. Even at the back end of this game all the simple things were being done really well and that was really good to see.”

The Warriors were able to bounce back straight away following a disappointing loss at Hull KR on the opening day. On improvements from last week, Farrell said: “I don’t want to mention last week too much, it’s been and gone now. I think tonight’s a real positive for us. I think the lads who came in were great, I thought Willie Isa was a real difference for us. Patrick Mago coming off the bench as well, I just think we performed really well and its a step in the right direction now.”

Having been appointed Captain ahead of the 2023 Super League campaign, the fixture was the first time Liam Farrell had Captained the side back at the DW. He said: “I’m just trying to focus on my own performances individually and lead by that way. If I can do that then I can make sure the teams going in the right direction as well. But its a huge honour for me to be the captain of the club and hopefully it can be a great year for us.

“One thing, and I know all the lads have been looking forward to it, was coming back here and playing. Last year it was a very good place for us, teams found it tough coming here to win and we want to make it the exactly the same coming here this year. I think everyone’s really pleased to have been here tonight, including us as players.

Liam Farrell added: “You home form is one of your main keys in a year and hopefully we can do the same as we did last year.”
