The youthful Warriors side put in a good performance against Betfred League One side Oldham Roughyeds, crossing for four tries in the defeat on Sunday afternoon.

The squad consisted entirely of Wigan Warriors Academy players, with the exception of Logan Astley and Tom Forber, putting in a fighting performance and going toe to toe with professional opposition.

Report

Oldham opened the scoring after just 5 minutes, with Matty Wilkinson charging down a kick allowing for Jack Blagbrough to power over, with Martyn Ridyard converting the kick.

Warriors replied only minutes later, with some quick fire crossfield passing finding its way to Niall Poval in the left corner, who touched the ball down unchallenged. Kieran Tyrer couldn’t covert the kick leaving the score at 4-6.

Oldham regained the lead through Patrick Ah Van, with the Samoan pushing himself over the line in the left corner, with Blagbrough again converting his kick.

But the young Warriors again had an answer, with Kian McDermott shrugging off an attempted tackle on the 30 metre line, before charging into the space to put the ball down. Tyrer was this time able to convert to make the score 10-12.

The Warriors then showed great determination in the game by taking the lead, with a fantastic driving run by Ryan Brown to break the Oldham line before spraying the ball right to Tyrer, who ran into the space to put the ball down, before converting another kick to make the score 16-12.

Oldham responded quickly however, with Joe Hartley scoring his first following a scrum, racing into right corner, with Ridyard again converting his kick.

Wigan again took the lead following the interval, with a Jack Farrimond kick finding its way to Maddox Jeffery in the try zone to score, with Farrimond converting to make the score 22-18 to the Warriors Academy.

Oldham found themselves back in the lead soon after, with a sequence of passes finding its way to Ellis Keppel in the corner to score. Ridyard then converted his fourth kick to regian their two point advantage.

Oldham then furthered their lead through Joe Harley’s second try of the day, before completing his hat-trick only minutes later, with Ridyad converting the first but missing the second, leaving the score at 22-34 to Oldham.

Hartley added his fourth try of the game to seal the victory for Oldham, charging forward in the corner to score the final try of the day. Ridyard converted his kick to complete the score, despite a valiant performance from the Warriors academy.
