Jake Wardle says he “really enjoyed” making his first appearance for Wigan and discusses settling in.

Joining in October from Huddersfield Giants, in a swap deal that saw Sam Halsall and Jack Bibby go in the opposite direction, Wardle looks set to be a force in the centre for the Warriors this season, receiving man of the match in his first game at the DW in a 32-4 victory over Salford.

“Obviously it was a tough game”, said Wardle, “but it was still really enjoyable.

“It’s been a long pre-season but once you’re into competitive games, it’s a bit better and a bit easier to start getting a feel for the game. There’s a lot of positives to take out of it.”

The game served as a testimonial for long-term Warriors player Sam Powell, with an impressive crowd of nearly 4,000 in attendance to help celebrate his career at the club.

“I’m glad we got the turnout we did for Sam with it being his testimonial, and to get the result as well made it a bit sweeter.” said Wardle.

Wardle says support from fans and colleagues alike has helped his transition into the Warriors environment at Robin Arena Park.

“Everyone’s been really welcoming”, he said, “The fans, the players and staff. It’s made my job a bit easier in terms of settling in”.

The last pre-season fixture ahead of the Super League season, this was the first time a full strength Wigan squad had been named, with previous squads being made up of primarily younger players such as Junior Nsemba, Jacob Douglas and Logan Astley, who all featured again against Salford.

Speaking on how the younger players have faired, Wardle said: “I think (the future) is in safe hands

“(The young lads) came on and they played really well. Things are looking good for the club with these sorts of players coming through.”
