Women win against Giants

Wigan Warriors Women secured a play-off semi-final spot with a superb 42-4 win over Huddersfield Giants in a performance that included seven different try-scorers. 

A perfect start saw Wigan strike inside the opening minute, Abbie Singleton finding the run of Lauréane Biville who crossed, Georgia Wilson’s conversion pinged in off the post for an early 6-0 lead. Huddersfield came close to a reply when Amelia Brown raced down the wing but she was forced into touch by some very strong defence. 

The lead became 12-0 on 35 minutes as Carys Marsh dived over after a nice passage of play with Wilson converting before a superb third try of the afternoon arrived just three minutes later as Becky Greenfield spun out of a challenge from the Giants defence to dive in and Wilson kicked for 18-0 at the break.

Wigan resumed control within four minutes of the restart as Marsh picked out Anna Davies who crossed in the corner, Wilson converted for a 24-0 lead. Wilson extended the lead herself, rounding the defence in a great solo effort to pop the ball down and then convert her own try for 30-0.

Huddersfield hit back in the 51st minute as a pass from Erin Stott found the arms of new recruit Caroline Collie who crossed for a try which saw the conversion missed at 30-4.

After chances for both Beth Hayes and Kaitlin Hilton, Wigan regained control on the hour mark as Marsh found Mary Coleman who darted through a gap before cutting inside to score in a similar way to her famous try away at Leeds, Wilson converted for 36-4.

The 40-point mark was reached on the 70th minute as Holly Speakman stretched out an arm to touch down under heavy Giants defence as Georgia Wilson made it seven from seven for 42-4. 

The final whistle led to a roar from the home crowd as the Warriors Women wrapped up a semi-final spot.
