Wigan run riot against Robins

Bevan French and Liam Marshall both crossed for hat-tricks as Mike Cooper and Patrick Mago both got their first scores in Cherry & White.

Wigan went over for four scores in the first half as they eased into a 16-point lead with a double from Bevan French, a first try in Cherry & White for Mike Cooper as well as an effort from Liam Marshall.

Kai Pearce-Paul and Liam Marshall went over for tries in quick succession at the start of the second half before Bevan French completed his hat-trick just after the hour mark. Patrick Mago also got in on the act as he scored his first try for the Club in the closing stages but not before Liam Marshall also completed a hat-trick.

Wigan flew out of the blocks and as they worked their way up the pitch, Jai Field made a break on the right edge before sending Bevan French away to finish off the move, the conversion from out wide was slotted over by Harry Smith for a 6-0 lead after 3 minutes.

Almost immediately from the restart were in again, a mistake from Hull KR inside their own 20m allowed Wigan a full set from close range a cut-out pass from Cade Cust found Liam Marshall in acres of space on the left edge to cross. Harry Smith couldn’t add the extras this time but Wigan had the 10-0 lead.

Wigan found their way upfield once more from the restart, Liam Marshall had eyes for the corner again but after finding himself swamped by the Hull KR defence he put a kick towards the posts for Mike Cooper to go over. The video referee had a second look but confirmed that Cooper had marked his home debut with a score, Smith added the conversion from in front of the posts for 16-0 after 10 minutes.

Bevan French added his second of the game in the 19th mintute, after a good half break from Harry Smith a chip over the top from Jai Field trickled towards the goal line. Lachlan Coote saw the ball bounce and Bevan French didn’t need a second invitation as he got the ball down in-goal to extend the lead to 20-0 with a missed conversion from Smith.

The Robins got themselves on the board in the 29th minute as a cross-field kick opened up some space on the right edge for the visitors and Ethan Ryan collected the ball in the air to open Hull KR’s account. The touchline conversion from Coote was wide and it was 20-4.

Hull KR added some pressure to end the first half but despite their best efforts, they couldn’t find a way through the Wigan defensive line and it remained 20-4 going into the break.

Wigan added two more quick tries at the start of the second half. The first effort saw Bevan French adding the footwork, the defence couldn’t bring him down and he fired a pass out wide to Kai Pearce-Paul who glided in on the left edge, converted by Smith. Liam Marshall then went in a few minutes later as Wigan found joy down the left again, Smith couldn’t add the extras on this occasion but it was 30-4 to Wigan.

Bevan French completed his hat-trick just after the hour mark as he latched onto a pass from Harry Smith to speed down the wing and put the ball down in the right corner. The conversion from the touchline was missed as Wigan made it 34-4 with 15 minutes to go.

Patrick Mago crashed over from close range to register his first effort for the Club, before Liam Marshall flew onto a kick through to ease over for the final score of the evening, making it a 46-4 win for the Warriors.
