  • Matt Peet confirms John Bateman faces a spell out through injury.
  • Peet: “John would run through a brick wall for his team mates and he’s devastated to miss the next few weeks.”

Matt Peet has provided an update as he confirms John Bateman suffered a broken rib during the Warriors Magic Weekend fixture against St Helens.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, Peet said: “Kaide [Ellis] was touch and go last week, didn’t quite make it and Kai [Pearce-Paul] took ill the night before the game, so those two come back in which is good. The fact that we lose Brad Singleton to suspension and John Bateman to a broken rib, it’s pretty much like for like.”

On Bateman’s injury, Peet said: “John Bateman broke a rib so he’s probably going to be out for around a month. He did it really early in the game actually, credit to him he played tough but he was in discomfort throughout.

“It’ll be four or five weeks, I think he can do contact in around 4-weeks and then we’ll see how he reacts to that but credit to John, to get through a game of that physicality and intensity, 70-odd minutes with a broken rib shows what he’s made of and it says a bit about the group as well I think.”

He added: “If it wasn’t so awkwardly positioned the rib that is involved, I think he would’ve been on the field today – he was asking those questions but it’s a bit complicated. John would run through a brick wall for his team mates and he’s devastated to miss the next few weeks.”

Finally, Peet mentioned Tommy Leuluai, who remains sidelined with a calf injury: “We’ll err on the side of caution with Tommy, the time of the year and the timing in his career – we won’t be rushing him back.”
