Byrne and Havard extend

Wigan Warriors are delighted to confirm that both Liam Byrne and Ethan Havard have signed new contracts with the Club.

Two rising stars in the forward line – Byrne has signed a new three-year deal, while Havard has put pen to paper for a further two years.

The two prop forwards have had excellent 2022 seasons so far, having featured heavily for Matt Peet and becoming Challenge Cup winners.

Byrne, 22, joined Wigan’s Academy from Cadishead Rhinos and has progressed ever since – becoming a Under-19s Grand Final winner, signing a professional contract, making his first team debut and playing 68 games for the Club.

With one year remaining on his previous deal, this new contract for Byrne means he will stay at the Club at least until the end of 2025.

On his new deal, Byrne said: “I’m very grateful to be extending my time at this great Club and looking forward to what the future holds for me personally and as a team.”

Havard, 20, joined the Club from Wigan St Patricks ARLFC in 2016 and he soon went on to become an Academy Grand Final winner. Following his senior debut in 2019, the 6ft 3 forward has become a regular in the first team, making 51 appearances overall so far.

His new deal will see him stay at Wigan at least until the end of 2024.

On signing for two more years, Havard said: “I’m really pleased and grateful to be extending my time at my hometown Club. Wigan is the perfect environment to help me develop my game and I’m very excited to see what the future holds for me and the team.”

On both Byrne and Havard, Head Coach Matt Peet said: “Liam has developed himself into a lead front rower which is testament to his hard work and dedication. He is a pleasure to work with and is someone we are really proud of. We look forward to seeing him develop further.

“Ethan has a very professional approach to his game and has worked hard to achieve what he has so far. He is very determined to take his game to the next level which is exciting for him and the Club.”
