  • Salford Red Devils v Wigan Warriors, Friday 10th June, 8pm K.O.

Matt Peet gave his pre-match thoughts as the Warriors prepare to face Salford Red Devils this Friday in Betfred Super League.

The Head Coach started by reflecting on a busy couple of weeks for the Warriors who lifted the Challenge Cup before coming from behind to beat Castleford last weekend in the Super League: “I’m pleased with the way we turned up at the weekend following what is a physical and emotional challenge, going to Tottenham, the celebrations and everything that entails. I was really pleased.

“I thought the way that we reacted out of the Tottenham experience was really positive for where we want to be as a group and organisation, not just this season but for the future. It’s a no excuses approach.”

On this week’s opposition, Salford, he said: “I think Salford at their best are a really quality team. We judge them on their two performances against us this year and both games have been as tough as any we’ve had. If you look at the last one there was time where they carved us up for fun, posted tries and they have the ability to do that if you’re off the mark. The attacking threats they’ve got, particularly through the backline, you know that if you start slow or have any inconsistencies in your defence they are a team that will expose it.”

Questioned on what he can take into the game, Peet said: “I can’t remember too many 80-minute performances from us this year so what we’re looking for is consistency at this time of year. We’ve been patchy across the last six weeks so I think what we’d be looking for is more consistency throughout the performance so we aren’t looking at one half or another as a strength, but being pleased with the full 80-minutes.”

The Warriors boss made five changes against Castleford, he explains that he wants his team to be adaptable under any circumstances: “Challenging the players to play in different positions and be adaptable proved beneficial last week when there was quite a bit of rotation. It makes you a lot more flexible when injuries or suspensions hit, we’ve spoken a lot this season about the best teams will be the most adaptable teams.”

Finally, Peet was asked about the availability of John Bateman this week: “Everything went well for him and his partner, Amy, at the weekend. They welcomed their baby boy, we’re happy, it’s great to have him back in work this week, he’s full of energy as usual and he’s available.”
