Getting to know Astley & Nicholson

Ahead of tonight’s Betfred Super League game against Huddersfield Giants, we take a closer look at young duo Logan Astley and Matty Nicholson who are both set to make their Wigan Warriors debuts at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Profile

  • A product of the Wigan Warriors Academy, Astley trained with the first team throughout pre-season and has continued to during the 2022 season.
  • Born in 2003 in Billinge, Astley started playing Rugby League at the age of five for Wigan St Patricks ARLFC.
  • Astley also played at Wigan Rugby Union at the age of 12. The half back won a National Cup Final for Wigan St Pats along with a number of cups at school level with Standish High and Wigan RUFC.
  • He represented England Under-16s and also spent two years with Sale Sharks Academy and is accustomed to both codes of rugby.
  • The half back has played in all five games for Wigan’s Reserves side this year – winning all five games and scoring four tries.
  • The 18-year-old played alongside Harry Smith in the halves in the Reserves win over Hull FC earlier this year.

  • A product of the Wigan Warriors Academy, Nicholson earned a first team squad number for 2022.
  • Born in Halifax, Nicholson started playing Rugby League at Siddal at the age of seven.
  • The forward won the National Cup with amateur side Siddal at U16s level.
  • Nicholson has also represented England at U16s level against France, gaining victory in both tests.
  • The 18-year-old signed on loan for Betfred Championship side Newcastle Thunder at the start of 2022 to gain first team experience. He has featured nine times for Newcastle this season, scoring one try.
  • When he comes off the bench tonight, he will gain the Wigan Heritage Number 1118.
