Over 300 young people attended our latest Emerging Schools Festival hosted by Wigan Warriors Community Foundation.

15 High schools across Wigan and Chorley were involved in the festival, with games for both boys and girls ranging from school years 7 to year 10.

The festival, which showcases playing opportunities for all abilities from local schools saw over 200 boys take to the field as well as over 90 girls, in a big increase in the girls’ game.

Community Coach, Tom Marsh, said: “It was great to see so many boys and girls involved playing Rugby League. The main idea of the emerging schools’ festivals are to get boys and girls who might not play for a Community Club playing for schools, so to see around 300 boys and girls from Wigan and Chorley playing is amazing. We are looking to get many more set up throughout May, June and July.”

John Whalley, Women & Girl’s development officer added: “It is great to see the number of girls in Rugby League increasing and to have these emerging girls’ festivals each term going forward to increase participation. These players may not play out of school and it gives them an opportunity to enjoy Rugby League and make new friends. With schools from Wigan and surrounding areas all participating it’s great to see, I am looking forward to more festivals on the run up to summer.”
