Peet previews Giants

  • Matt Peet offered his pre-match thoughts as Wigan prepare to face Huddersfield on Thursday evening.
  • Peet: “I think we’ve got to be professional, there’s people playing for places but there’s two points at stake and I’m hoping that we want to set some standards as a Club.”
  • Huddersfield Giants v Wigan Warriors, Thursday 12th May, 8pm K.O.

Matt Peet says the Warriors are ‘focused on themselves’ as they gear up for an away fixture against Huddersfield Giants on Thursday evening.

“We very much focus on ourselves, we aren’t a team who alter much on opposition to opposition but I do know that Ian Watson is a smart coach, his teams line-up tactically and they’ll be well prepared so we’d be foolish to read too much into what they do,” Peet said.

The Warriors and the Giants both booked their places in the Challenge Cup Final on Saturday, where they will meet in three weeks time. On the back of the Semi Final win, Peet said: “We took time to acknowledge what we have achieved. We reflected on what we did well in the game, it’s important to recognise what we did well and what we’ve learnt over the past month and also some areas where we need to be better, particularly after conceding tries. It was important to let the lads enjoy it for a day, and we did that but attention quickly focuses on the next game.”

On this weeks game, he added: “I think it’s an important league game in it’s own right if you look at where the two teams are. It’s another week where we’ll be looking for improvements, we look to improve as a group but there’s a lot of individuals in there as well that know that they need to improve certain elements of their game and that’s why they’re in.”

Matt Peet has named a more youthful 21-player squad ahead of Thursday. On his decision to rotate his squad, he said: “We’ve had a few lads who have played a lot from the start of the season, you look at the minutes and the meters that they have covered, we’ve delved into that and made some comparisons for our squad. There’s also some lads who have been not training and just turning up for games and the turnaround is just a little bit too short so it’s the perfect opportunity to freshen up but we’re still looking for a top performance.

“I think we’ve got to be professional, there’s people playing for places but there’s two points at stake and I’m hoping that we want to set some standards as a Club.”

Summarising ahead of the fixture, the Warriors Head Coach added: “I think execution is going to be important, the team that wins the energy battle, as well as getting the combinations flowing will probably be on top. Looking at both squads, there’s certainly a lot of talent on show.”
