Matt Peet gave his thoughts ahead of Saturday’s Betfred Challenge Cup Semi Final tie against St Helens at Elland Road.

At Elland Road, Peet said: “I like the games on neutral grounds, it adds that cup final feeling. It’s special, it’s unique and it gives the fans the opportunity to drive over and hopefully get the place bouncing.

“It’s a carnival atmosphere for the fans and we have to play the part for our own fans, give them something to celebrate and our best performance is required. It motivates us massively.”

On facing rivals St Helens in the Semi Final: “There is a lot of drama around the game, and rightly so. It’s built up and it’s a massive occasion, but the game itself and the way you prepare technically, tactically and physically doesn’t change that much from a weekly basis.

“I’ve said it time again so far this season but It’s about improving, the way we performed against Warrington – we did some good things but we have to raise several levels if we’re going to get the result this week and the lads are aware of that. We have to show the best of us.”

He added: “I expect the most intense game of the season. I expect us to play better than we have done so far this year, but I also know that is going to take that level of performance. Saints are oozing with confidence, they’re really mature as a team.

“When I talk about intense games, I think Wigan v Saints is a standalone fixture on that. Without disrespecting anybody, when these two teams come together it’s another level in intensity, speed, ball in play. They play the game the right way.”

On the Challenge Cup itself, the Head Coach said: “It’s a very special trophy, very special to the Club. It has a magic about it, the fact you get to take all the fans and the families down to London in a showpiece game, it’s different. Hopefully we can get there.”

Finally, Peet encouraged the fans to get to Elland Road on Saturday for a slice of the action: “I’d encourage any fan that is feeling excited about the prospect of this game to get over to Leeds on Saturday. We thrive on that support from the fans, they’ve been outstanding all year and I do believe that our players respond to the noise that they make. It’s our job to give them something to cheer about.”
