Women’s Nines Round-up

  • Wigan Warriors Women represented at the inaugural Women’s Nines tournament on Sunday.

A mix of youth and experience graced the field for the Women in the inaugural Women’s Nines at Victoria Park, Warrington which saw two huge victories, a hard fought defeat and the welcome return of Rebecca Greenfield from injury.

Game One – Wakefield Trinity v Wigan Warriors

A perfect start to the opener against Wakefield Trinity Ladies as fullback Georgia Wilson crossed for a bonus point try before racing over on the wing for 9-0 to complete a brilliant brace. The latter conversion pinged off the post but the lead soon reached double figures at 13-0 as Mary Coleman broke the line to race over for a try. Wilson completed a stunning first half hat-trick by dashing over for a try which she converted for 20-0. 

The second half began with Gabi Leigh diving over for 24-0 before Rebecca Greenfield picked out Jade Gregory-Haselden who came achingly close to a bonus point try as she made it 28-0. Trinity were found out on the wings again as Beth Hayes supplied Rachael House who raced clear to cross for a bonus point try to wrap up the 33-0 victory.

Game Two – Wigan Warriors v Catalans Dragons

Next up, the challenge of Déesses Catalanes who opened with a try and conversion for Mailys Borak ahead of a blistering try for Wilson who also converted for 6-6. The second half saw Borak claim her second try before Leila Bessahli crossed for a try and Margot Canal went over in the corner for an 18-6 lead before a positive end to the game saw Kaitlin Hilton evade the defence to cross for 18-10.

Game Three – Hull FC v Wigan Warriors

The final game of the session saw a 30-0 triumph over youthful Hull FC Women which began with Rachael House and Anna Davies storming down the wings and crossing for bonus point tries with the latter converted by Rebecca Greenfield for a 12-0 lead. Greenfield capped off a good first half with a superb try of her own which she converted for an 18-0 lead into the interval.

Ellie Costello turned provider early in the second half with a clever crossfield run to find Kaitlin Hilton who touched down for 22-0 before Costello dashed through the line to claim a try of her own to extend the lead to 26-0. Davies turned provider late on as she raced down the wing before offloading to Wilson who crossed to claim her fifth try of the afternoon at 30-0 and secure the accolade of scoring in every game.

The group was won by Déesses Catalanes as they ended undefeated but with a mystery wildcard entry for the last finals day spot, our Women’s Nines journey may not be over yet. Off the pitch, Women’s captain Rachel Thompson shared her in-depth experience in the Physical and Mental Toughness Inspiration Session alongside Savannah Andrade (YCK Ladies) and Sean Scantelbury (Eng Women Strength & Conditioner).
