Warriors weekend round-up

  • Wigan Warriors beat Huddersfield Giants at the DW Stadium on Thursday evening.

  • Wigan Warriors Women played out a pre-season friendly against Salford Red Devils on Sunday.

Following the Warriors win over Huddersfield on Thursday evening, Wigan’s Reserves and Women’s side were also in action over the weekend.

The Warriors kick-started a good weekend of results for the Cherry & Whites with a brace of tries from Liam Farrell as well as efforts from Jake Bibby and John Bateman to complete a 22-12 win over Huddersfield Giants on Thursday night, making it a third consecutive win in Betfred Super League.

On Saturday, Wigan Warriors Reserves side travelled to Hull FC as they came away with a 42-10 win.

The Warriors eased to an 18-0 lead at half time with an Abbas Miski double and Zach Eckersley going over, all three efforts converted by Harry Smith. From the restart, Wigan ran in two more unanswered tries from Ben O’Keefe and Sam Halsall to take them out to 28-0.

Hull FC responded shortly afterwards with a converted effort but the Warriors continued their rout. Zach Eckersley got his second on 67 minutes, before Abbas Miski completed his hat-trick in the 75th. Ri’chards Nsemba scored late on to make it 42-6 but not before Hull FC could add a consolation effort on the hooter to see the game end 42-10.

Sunday afternoon saw Wigan Warriors Women make the short trip to Cadishead to face Salford Red Devils in their first pre-season game of 2022, as they named a mixed team of first team and Academy players.

It was Wigan who got off to a strong start, Kerrie Evans breaking the lane to race 90 meters and get the score, converted by Doria for 6-0. Salford hit back with two first-half tries from Lauren Ellison and Tamzin Corcoran, both converted by Demi Jones to see Wigan trailing 12-6 at half time.

Wigan responded well as two efforts from Mary Coleman went unanswered in the second forty, both tries were converted by Doria who was 3/3 on the afternoon from the boot as Wigan took the 18-12 victory on Sunday afternoon.
