Women’s Heritage Numbers

As part of our 150th year celebrations, Wigan Warriors are pleased to have awarded our 51 Women’s team representatives with their Club Heritage Numbers.

Formed towards the end of 2017, Wigan Warriors Women was built up to compete in the 2018 Women’s Super League. In their inaugural season they scored over 300 points to see them finish second in the league, they faced Leeds Rhinos in the Women’s Grand Final at Manchester Regional Arena, beating the Rhinos 18-16 to be crowned Champions in the same year that Wigan also won the Men’s and Academy Grand Finals.

The Women have since competed in the Betfred Women’s Super League in 2019 and 2021 (2020 cancelled due to Covid), with their 2022 season set to start in March.

All 51 players to have represented Wigan Warriors Women in a senior game have been awarded a Heritage Number, with their new signings for 2022 due to receive a Heritage Number upon appearing in a senior game for the Club in the coming season.

The Women’s team for 2022 were invited down to the Museum of Wigan Life for a private look around the Gerrumonside! The passion of rugby league past, present & future exhibition. The Women’s team were addressed by Matt Peet before being presented with their playing shirts by Executive Director Kris Radlinski ahead of the 2022 season.

Kris Radlinski also handed out Heritage certificates to the players present who have a heritage number. Speaking on the event, Radlinski said: “A Heritage Number from Wigan Warriors confirms your membership in a very exclusive Club. It is something that can never be taken away from you. It acknowledges that you have represented the most historic Club in the game.

“We have seen a significant rise in recent years in the Women’s game and this trend is not going to slow down. The women who represent Wigan Warriors are inspirational role models to the young girls of Wigan, in a similar way that the senior Men’s team inspire young boys to get involved in Rugby League. It was an absolute honour for Matt and I to be there to present the shirts and certificates.”

Also in attendance and on hand to give his thoughts on the importance of heritage was Club historian, Keith Sutch, who has helped to pull together the Heritage information for the Women’s side.

Former Warriors Women’s players are kindly asked to contact the Club on community@wiganwarriors.com to arrange a suitable collection or delivery of your Heritage certificate.
