Kaide Ellis spoke to wiganwarriors.com after making his home debut for the Club as Wigan ran out 34-12 winners over Leeds Rhinos on Friday night.

Ellis started by mentioning the crowd, with 12,500 at the DW Stadium to watch the Warriors: I thought it was a great turnout considering the weather conditions. They were very loud, very passionate and it was good to have them jump on the back of us when we were playing well, scoring tries. We could feel every bit of energy, it was exciting and we can’t wait for the rest of the year.”

The Warriors found themselves 6-0 before turning the scoreline around to a 12-6 lead before half-time: “We addressed at half time, we thought we were good but could’ve been a bit better. It was probably a bit of a slower start than what we would have liked, the first 10 minutes needed cleaning up a bit and to be more clinical.”

On his involvement in Cherry & White so far, Ellis said: “I didn’t want to feel like I had the right to walk in, I wanted to earn it and I think I did. In saying that, the depth that we have at the Club in the front row – it’s tough, there’s times where I thought I wouldn’t be in there with the young lads pushing me.

“It’s a good mix, there’s a lot of young lads and Paddy (Mago) as well, so I think myself and Singo (Brad Singleton) starting really brings a difference to the team with good options off the bench. Paddy is there to come on, he’s got the offloads, he’s been working and he’s doing his job well – we all compliment each other which is good.”

Following the win, the forward admits that he does need to do some work on learning the winners song: “I need to get some lyrics, I can’t understand people so I haven’t picked it up yet. I need to get some lyrics and read them I think, so I’m a bit slow on that one.”

Reflecting on 2022 so far, he finalised: “It’s the perfect way you want to start. There are always bits to work on, we’re not happy with just winning, we want to keep getting better. We have a quality side across the park from 1-30 so it’s going to be a big year but we can’t hang our hat on that at the moment. Two from two is unreal but we’ve got to keep getting better and we can’t get complacent, that’s the attitude we bring every day so hopefully, it’s going to be a good year.”

See the Warriors in action at the DW Stadium once more as they return next Thursday 24th February to face Huddersfield Giants for Round 3 of the Betfred Super League. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought HERE.
