  • Warrington Wolves v Wigan Warriors, Saturday 29th January, 5:30pm K.O.

Iain Thornley says Wigan are ‘ready to go’ as they prepare to face Warrington in a final pre-season friendly ahead of the 2022 Betfred Super League season.

“It’s been a tough pre-season, it always is. Wigan is known for the way they train and how hard they train, it’s good to be at the end of it and everyone is looking forward to getting their first minutes in their first game,” he said.

On the content of pre-season, he added: “There’s been a lot of skills, morning and afternoons, long sessions as well. Different days have different focuses but there’s a lot of things to go at in rugby, pre-season is a long time but it’s tough to get all those things in pre-season as well. It’s been a lot of content but we’re ready to go.”

The Warriors faced Newcastle Thunder in their opening pre-season friendly, a game which Thornley kept a close eye on despite not being involved: “Yeah I watched it, it was a good first hit out. A lot of young boys got some minutes, young boys from the Academy and they went really well. It’s nice to see those young lads stepping up but also playing well.”

Speaking ahead of Stefan Ratchford’s testimonial game, Thornley said: “I know Stef a little bit, we’ve got a lot of mutual friends. It’ll be nice to be a part of that for him, he’s been a great servant to Super League and to Warrington themselves, so he deserves everything he’s got and hopefully everyone will turn up in numbers for the game.”

“It is a little bit!” Thornley said in jest when quizzed on whether pre-season games are not just about winning.

“It’s just about hopefully seeing the things that we’ve worked on in pre-season and showing that in the game at the weekend. If we’re there or thereabouts, get the majority of that work sorted for that game then it puts us in good stead for Round 1 against Hull KR.”
