October camps a success

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation wrapped up another successful week of camps and activities for local children over October half-term.

The Club’s Robin Park Arena opened its doors to welcome over 400 children and young people over October half-term on a range of different camps and activities including:

  • Rugby League camps
  • Rugby League development days
  • SEND and Disability camps
  • Dance and cheer camp

Our new dance and cheer camp proved to be a huge success, this 2-day camp run alongside the Warrior Girls allows children to come and take part in dance and cheerleading activities that will inspire them to become more involved with Wigan Warriors in the future.

We also delivered our traditional Rugby League camps at Robin Park Arena during October half-term, with this being replicated across Lancashire at the University of Central Lancashire. It wasn’t just our rugby camps that have been replicated in Lancashire, we held 2 development days for young people in school years 7-10, this is something that will become a permanent fixture in our camp and development day delivery in 2022 on the back of a successful week in October.

Something for everyone

During October half-term, we have been able to provide activities for children of different ages, abilities and needs. None more than the Hutchinson family, who had 3 children book onto our camps in October. Mum, Emma, said: “I have managed to drop all 3 of my children off at the same place, they have benefited loads especially with them being off school, they either want to go somewhere different everyday meaning the cost of half term can be expensive if we have days out, but it has also kept them active!”

The Hutchinson’s all attended camps during October half-term.

She added: “Phoebe plays rugby, so she could have chosen the rugby camp, but was so excited when she knew that there was a dance & cheer camp on as she is a cheerleader for Hawks Intensity. Toby has been down to the Rugby camps in the past but can find this difficult due to large numbers that this camp can bring and the physicality of the camps. However, this time he decided to try out the SEND & Disability camp and absolutely loved it.

“The camps have been brilliant, all of the Community Foundation team have made each child feel welcome, involved and part of a community team. Thank you so much Wigan Warriors for making it possible that 3 children with different needs/interests have been able to have fun and keep fit and active during the October half-term holidays.”

Mike Stoneley Community Outreach Officer says “We want families and children to feel like they have a choice of what activities they can do with us during the school holidays and want to be able to make our camps as inclusive as possible so that everyone has an equal opportunity to join our camps.

“Our SEND and Disability camp has become well established since its introduction in Easter 2021 and is now a permanent feature of our holiday activities, and now with the introduction of our dance and cheer camp, we hope to be able to provide other activities for those children with interests further than Rugby League.”
