19-year-old Sam Halsall made his debut for Wigan Warriors against St Helens in 2020 before going out on loan to Championship side Newcastle Thunder in 2021 and then returned to Wigan towards the end of the season.

Having made just one appearance in 2020, Halsall was visibly happy to have gone on to make eight appearances for the Cherry and Whites in 2021, crossing for three tries: “I wasn’t getting the opportunities so that’s what prompted my loan spell at Newcastle, I ended up playing six games there which got me some match fitness to come back to Wigan and perform.

“I didn’t think I’d get that many games back at Wigan this season so it’s been a good opportunity to return and I’ve been lucky really.”

Sam Halsall crossing for his first senior try against York City Knights in April.

The Warriors’ season was cut short with a loss to Leeds Rhinos in the Play-Off Eliminator game, a fixture that Halsall didn’t feature in. The centre reflected on the end to the season: “I’m sad the year has come to an end early, I was hoping to get a few more games in but I’ve been lucky with the support that I’ve had from the fans, it’s been quite overwhelming but I’m looking forward to the new season already.”

With more appearances for Wigan in 2021, the youngster is hoping to cause a headache for the new Coaching Team for the 2022 season: “100%, that’s what you always want to do. When a new Head Coach comes in you want to do your best to impress and show what you have to offer so I’m hoping to do that.”
