Memorable Derby wins

As we count down the days until The Derby at the DW Stadium, we take a look back at three memorable wins against our arch rivals, St Helens…
Wigan 27-0 St Helens (Silk Cut Challenge Cup Final, 1989)
In a fantastic display by the Warriors, it was the first time a team had been held to nil in a final for almost four decades. Wigan ran in five tries from Ellery Hanley, Andy Gregory, Steve Hampson and a Kevin Iro double, three converted by Joe Lydon and wrapped up with an Andy Gregory drop goal, in front of a 78,000 strong crowd at Wembley. It is one that sits in the memories of many Wigan fans to this day.

St Helens 10-22 Wigan (Super League Grand Final, 2010)
Michael Maguire led the Warriors to Old Trafford in October 2010, to take victory and lift the Super League trophy for the first time since 1998. Martin Gleeson crossed for a brace, with Darrell Goulding bagging a try in the first half. St Helens had struck back and Pat Richards was forced to retire from the match but a dazzling solo effort from Sam Tomkins saw the Warriors lift the trophy in an emphatic Derby and Final.

Wigan 28-24 St Helens (Good Friday Derby, 2011)
One of the most memorable good Friday fixtures of recent times. A sell out crowd packed into the DW Stadium, and the atmosphere was electric. The Warriors had built up a great lead, doubles were scored on the day by Josh Charnley and Pat Richards, but they had been pegged back and trailed late on from a Jamie Foster penalty goal. With a minute to go, Paul Deacon sent Liam Farrell through and over the whitewash in one of the most dramatic good Friday derby wins.Wigan host their local rivals this Friday, the second helping of the derby in the Super League in 2021, having lost the Round 13 away fixture in July.
