10 Wigan-Saints facts

Ahead of Friday’s Rivals Round clash between Wigan and St Helens, Club historian Keith Sutch provides 10 facts from The Derby down the years...
- The first ever Derby match played between Wigan and St Helens under the Northern Union following the breakaway in 1895-96 was on 16th November 1895 at Knowsley Road, St Helens with the game ending in a 0-0 draw in front of 3,000 spectators.
- The first home game for Wigan v St Helens was on 24th March 1876, Wigan winning the game at their then Frog Lane ground in front of a 4,000 crowd.
- The first meeting of the two teams in the Challenge Cup was on 3rd April 1897 again an away game with Saints winning 11-0. Saints went on to win the Cup in that season.
- Wigan’s longest winning run against St Helens is 14 matches from April 1920 to December 1926.
- Wigan’s biggest victory over St Helens came on 26th May 1997 at Knowsley Road, St Helens by 65 points to 12.
- The largest crowd for a Wigan – Saints game came on 27th March 1959 at Central Park, Wigan with a total of 47,747.
- The largest crowd at the JJB / DW Stadium was recorded as 25,004 ironically on 25th March 2005.
- The largest away crowd at Knowsley Road was 35,695 on 26th December 1949.
- The largest attendance at the new Totally Wicked Stadium is 17,980 (capacity of 18,000) – this has been achieved on three occasions – 6th April 2012, 25th March 2016 and 30th March 2018.

- Wigan won the final matches at both Central Park on 5th September 1999 (28-20) and at Knowsley Road on 2nd April 2010 (18-10).
