Lam previews Salford

  • Adrian Lam previews Wigan’s Betfred Super League Round 18 clash with Salford.
  • Lam: “We’ve always had a tough tussle with them over the last couple of years.”
  • Wigan Warriors v Salford Red Devils, Fri 6th August, DW Stadium, 7:45pm K.O.

Adrian Lam is urging his side to replicate their impressive performance against Leigh Centurions last week when they take on Salford Red Devils this Friday evening.

The Warriors will come up against Richard Marshall’s side for the second time in 2021, having won narrowly in their first encounter back in May.

Speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, the Warriors head coach began by discussing the opposition.

“They’ve got some great individuals in their team. They will also have a lot of fresh players. We respect them very highly.

“We’ve always had a tough tussle with them, over the last couple of years. The last time we played them, we won by a field goal at the death. We know how hard it’ll be on the weekend.”

Wigan head into the game off the back of a 50-6 win over Leigh last Sunday. However, Lam believes his side can’t take their foot off the gas on Friday.

“We put on a good score at the weekend but we can’t get carried away with that. We have to understand why that came about and make sure we put in another consistent performance to match.”

With the 21-man squad being announced earlier on Wednesday, Lam ran through some of the changes in the side, beginning with the absence of Tommy Leuluai.

“It looks like he’s done his hamstring to a pretty serious degree. We will know a little bit more about that when the scan results come back, but it doesn’t look good.”

On Liam Farrell: “He’s had a tight calf over the last couple of weeks and rather than put him at risk, we are gonna take the opportunity to rest him this week. He’s not injured, but he’s close, having played a lot of minutes for our club.”

He also took the time to discuss players likely to return to action. “We welcome back Zak Hardaker, for who game time will be limited as he returns from his budging disk in his neck.

“Also Jai Field, who’s game time will be limited and the same for Morgan Smithies. Tony Clubb, Liam Marshall, and Ethan Havard also come back into the picture.”
