McDonnell returns to York

Wigan Warriors can confirm that youngster James McDonnell has rejoined York City Knights on a new week-to-week loan deal.

McDonnell, 21, made two appearances for York earlier this season in his previous loan spell against Widnes Vikings and Oldham RLFC, impressing in both.

The two-time Academy Grand Final winner has worked under Knights head coach James Ford previously within the England Academy set-up, helping England to a series victory over the Australian Schoolboys in 2018.

On his return to York, McDonnell said: “It’s great to be back with York. I feel like my first loan spell was cut too short, so I’m hoping I can get some more game time and help York on their way to achieve what they want from this year.”

Warriors assistant coach, Sean O’Loughlin, added: “This is another great chance for James to show what he can do and get some valuable game time in the Championship. He loved his time with York when he was on loan there earlier this year and we’re looking forward to seeing how he goes when he returns. We wish him all the best.”
