Adrian Lam praised the efforts of his young side in their 50-6 victory over Leigh Centurions on Sunday afternoon.

The Cherry and Whites put in a classy performance against their local rivals, putting on nine tries including a first senior hat-trick for Umyla Hanley.

Speaking to the media following the win, the Wigan head coach began by giving his immediate reaction to the win.

“I was really pleased for the group. It’s been a hectic time for us, with around seven games in the last 30 days or so.

“I was really proud of the performance based on the team out there today.”

Lam gave particular praise to the performances a number of young players who stepped up to the plate due to late withdrawals.

“We had a few late changes which could have disrupted our performance, but the two young players playing on the wing in Sam Halsall and Umyla Hanley did really well, and Amir Bourouh off the bench did well too.

He also discussed the Man of the Match winning performance of half back Harry Smith, who was at the heart of the Wigan attack on Sunday.

“He’s had a good run of it over the last six to eight weeks. He’s still got lots to improve upon but he certainly showed some good signs out there today.”

Centre Oliver Gildart was a late withdrawal, leading to the inclusion of Sam Halsall, who grabbed his first Super League try for the Warriors.

On Gildart: “He pulled up in the captain’s run yesterday with a bit of a strain, but when he arrived today he was still going to play.

“He went out and had a run for the warm up and said it was pulling, so we didn’t want to take the risk on him.”

After scoring the opening try, Tommy Leuluai left the field with a hamstring injury in the first half. On his condition: “He said he felt a ‘pop’ which is never good when that’s the feedback.

“We will address his situation and the level of damage tomorrow.”
