Wigan lose to Warrington

- Match report as Wigan Warriors lose to Warrington Wolves at the DW Stadium.
- Tries from Oliver Gildart, Willie Isa and Sam Powell not enough to overturn Warrington’s scores.
- FT | Wigan Warriors 14-40 Warrington Wolves.
Wigan Warriors were unable to get back to winning ways on Wednesday night, losing to Warrington Wolves 14-40 at the DW Stadium in Round 12 of the Betfred Super League.
Despite two tries in early in the second half, the Warriors left themselves with too much to do in the last 20 minutes to overturn The Wire’s points tally.
Wigan will now look ahead to their next fixture in four days time as they travel to face St Helens.
Report
As the last of the day’s sunshine crept through the open corners of the DW Stadium stands, the Warriors began brightly, going close on two occasions.
However, it was the visitors who grabbed the first score of the game, through Connor Wrench. In their first visit to Wigan’s half, Daryl Clark found the onrushing centre with a grubber to touch down.
The Primrose and Blues grabbed their second in the 15th through Jake Mamo after an interception off an Oliver Gildart pass enabled the Warrington man to run 70 metres to score.
Warrington added another in the 22nd minute through forward Matt Davis. An offload from Blake Austin found the Wolves’ number 13 to touch down.
The Warriors got their first score before the break through Sam Powell. A great carry and offload from Kai Pearce-Paul created space for the Wigan hooker to run clear for a try.
Mamo grabbed his second of the evening shortly after the break, in very similar fashion to his first. This time, the Warrington man latched onto a Harry Smith pass to run home from over 60 metres.
Wigan reduced the score deficit in the 50th minute when Willie Isa crossed for his first score of the season. A great cut-out ball from stand-in full back Jackson Hastings found Isa the centre to go over in the corner.
Gildart was next on the scoresheet, touching down Wigan’s third of the night. The centre latched onto a Hastings grubber to go over in the left corner.
Warrington extended their lead in the 63rd through ex-Wiganer Jack Hughes. Shortly after a set-restart, the visitors worked the ball from left to right to score in the corner.
Ben Curry added a further score for Warrington in the 73rd as the end to a left edge break for the visitors.
Jake Mamo completed his hattrick in the 77th, latching onto a short Wigan drop out to run 10 and touch down.
