  • Wakefield Trinity v Wigan Warriors, Thurs 24th June, Mobile Rocket Stadium, 7:45pm K.O.

Head coach Adrian Lam has named the Wigan Warriors squad to face Wakefield Trinity this Thursday evening in the Betfred Super League.

The Cherry and Whites make their first journey to the Mobile Rocket Stadium in 2021 on Thursday to face Chris Chester’s Trinity. Lam’s men will be looking to bounce back from their back-to-back defeats, while the home side will have hope of doing the same.

Team news

Youngsters Brad O’Neill and James McDonnell have been recalled from their loan spells to be included in the squad this week.

O’Neill was on an extended loan deal with Widnes Vikings in the Betfred Championship. After making nine appearances, scoring two tries and averaging 42 tackles per game, head coach Adrian Lam has decided to recall the hooker, in what could be a potential debut for Wigan on Thursday.

Second row McDonnell has also been recalled after a short spell at York City Knights. The 21-year-old played two games for York before suffering a lower back injury.

Wigan are without three first team players this game week after they were selected to play in England’s warm-up fixture against an All Stars XIII on Friday. Liam Farrell and John Bateman have been given the nod to represent England, while Jackson Hastings will line up for the All Stars.

Morgan Smithies returns for selection after overcoming an ankle injury which has left doubt over the young forward for the last couple of Betfred Super League Rounds.

Forward Brad Singleton received a two-match ban this week for a Grade C charge (head butting) committed against Hull KR in Round 10. He will serve the first of two this week.

Zak Hardaker will serve the second of a two-match ban after receiving a Grade C charge (head butting) for an incident against Catalans Dragons in Round 8.

After being handed a Grade F charge (Unacceptable language based on national or ethnic origin), prop forward Tony Clubb will serve the sixth of an eight-match ban. Full statement HERE.

Injury news

Providing updates on injuries on Tuesday, Lam began with winger Dom Manfredi, who was a late withdrawal from last week’s squad: “He’s got a lot of fluid on the knee and a loose bone fragment in there. It’s a week-to-week thing and he’ll likely not feature this week.”

On Bevan French, who the club are awaiting specialist guidance on the length of his recovery: “Still nothing yet. It’s frustrating not knowing, but it’s obviously not a one or two week thing.”

Jai Field continues his recovery from a torn hamstring he suffered in Round 1 against Leigh Centurions in March.
