Marsh named for Wales

  • Wales to face England in Mid-Season International on Friday.
  • Marsh set to make her first appearance for Wales.

Wigan’s Carys Marsh has been named in the 19-player Wales Women squad for Friday’s National Lottery Mid-Season International against England, and is set to make her first appearance for the national side.

Marsh, 23, joined the Warriors in 2019 from St Helens and has since cemented her role at hooker, earning a call-up to the Wales train-on squad in April.

On her time training with Wales, she said: “It was really exciting to be picked to train with the rest of the Wales squad, I was quite nervous before I met everyone but it was really good. My brother also played for Wales U19s, so he’s been really happy for me and we’ve had a bit of sibling banter with it, but it’s been great.

“I’ve been trying to focus on my performances at Wigan, working hard here and then transferring that over to my time with Wales to try and get selected, so it’s great to be included for the game this week against England.”

Marsh has put a big focus on growing Women’s Rugby League in Wales and hopes to inspire players of the future.

“If we can put a good performance in, I think that would be some really good exposure for Women’s Rugby League in Wales, hopefully that will then encourage more people to get involved.

“We’ve got more fixtures in the Autumn too, so again further exposure and if we can contribute towards that with our performances then that should be good for growing the sport and building towards qualifying for the World Cup in 2025.”

Friday’s fixture will see England Women receive live coverage for the first time, as Sky Sports host a double header with the England men’s team facing the Combined Nations All Stars.

Wigan’s No.9 is really looking forward to the test: “I’ve worked really hard in the off-season and trained hard with Wigan, I feel really lucky to be getting my first cap for Wales. I’m so excited to pull the shirt on tomorrow and play at the Halliwell Jones against England.”
